Furniture donations and tax records

A possible deduction is different from a guaranteed tax saving. For Brookline households.

Start with the actual decision

A qualifying noncash gift generally must go to a qualified organization, and household goods generally need to be in good used condition or better. Eligibility depends on your circumstances and the rules for the tax year. A commercial pickup payment is not automatically a charitable contribution.

Build it around your home

A Brookline pickup should fit the building as well as the furniture. Check condo or property-manager requirements, keep common hallways clear and tell the reviewer whether there is a private driveway or a street-loading question to resolve.

Keep the next step clear

Keep recipient acknowledgment, condition evidence and support for fair market value. Review current IRS Publication 526 for eligibility and substantiation, Publication 561 for valuation, and Form 8283 instructions for reporting. This site does not calculate a deduction or issue a charity receipt.
